Obtaining a Goods and Services Tax Identification Number (GSTIN) is mandatory for businesses in India whose turnover crosses specific thresholds (usually ₹40 Lakhs for goods and ₹20 Lakhs for services), or for those involved in inter-state supply and e-commerce.

The entire registration process is conducted online via the official GST portal and is completely free of government fees.

Step 1: Gather Required Documents

Before heading to the portal, keep digital copies (PDF or JPEG format) of the following documents ready:

  • PAN Card of the business or proprietor
  • Aadhaar Card of the promoters, directors, or proprietor
  • Proof of Business Address (Electricity bill, latest property tax receipt, or a rent/lease agreement with a No Objection Certificate)
  • Bank Account Proof (Cancelled cheque, bank statement page, or passbook copy)
  • Incorporation Documents (Certificate of incorporation, partnership deed, or MSME registration certificate)

Step 2: Complete Part A (Generating a TRN)

  1. Visit the official GST Portal (www.gst.gov.in).
  2. Navigate to Services > Registration > New Registration.
  3. Select Taxpayer under the “I am a” dropdown menu.
  4. Enter your state, district, legal business name (as per PAN), and PAN number.
  5. Input a valid email address and mobile number (used for receiving verification codes).
  6. Complete the captcha and click Proceed.
  7. Enter the separate OTPs sent to your mobile and email.
  8. Upon successful verification, the system will generate a 15-digit Temporary Reference Number (TRN). Note this down.

Step 3: Complete Part B (Filling Detailed Forms)

  1. Return to the GST portal, go to Services > Registration > New Registration, and select Temporary Reference Number (TRN).
  2. Enter your TRN and the captcha code, then verify via the OTP sent to your phone/email.
  3. Click the Edit icon next to your saved application to open Form GST REG-01.
  4. Fill out the tabbed sections carefully:
    • Business Details: General constitution and date of commencement.
    • Promoters/Partners: Personal details, DIN, and Aadhaar information.
    • Principal Place of Business: Address details and supporting utility bills or lease agreements.
    • Goods and Services: Select the appropriate HSN codes for goods or SAC codes for services.
    • Bank Accounts: Add your primary business banking details.
  5. Upload all required document files in the specified formats.

Step 4: Submission and Verification

  1. Go to the Verification tab and check the declaration box.
  2. Submit the application using one of the following methods:
    • Digital Signature Certificate (DSC): Mandatory for Companies and LLPs.
    • E-Sign / Electronic Verification Code (EVC): Generates an OTP sent to the Aadhaar-linked mobile number for proprietorships and partnerships.
  3. Once successfully submitted, an Application Reference Number (ARN) will be sent to your registered mobile and email.

Tracking and Approval

You can track the live status of your application on the portal using your ARN. Once verified by the tax officer (usually within 3 to 7 working days), your official GSTIN certificate will be available for download directly from your dashboard.
